So, Why Are Straight Razors So Expensive?
There's no question that straight razors are more expensive than multi-blade razors, for example. But why does this happen?
1. Straight razors are handmade
One of the main reasons why straight razors are so expensive is because they are handmade. As you can imagine, artisans need to have not only the expertise or skills but also the tools to manufacture them.
The reality is that it requires a lot of skill not only to know how to shape a blade but also how to put a very fine edge on it. This also takes a lot of time.
On the other hand, multi-blade razors are made by mass production methods. This means they are faster and cheaper to produce. Therefore, they are more affordable to the consumer.
2. Straight razors are made to last (durable)
Another reason why straight razors are so expensive is that they are extremely durable. In fact, if you take good care of it, you can make it last forever.
The easiest way to maintain your blade is to:
- Properly strop before and after your shave.
- Ensure that the blade is not wet and completely dry when you put it away.
- Hone and sharpen your blade when it starts requiring more stropping.
You should make sure that the blade is dry when you finish. You should use a dry cloth to clean it and just leave it to be air-dried.
3. They Are Environmentally Friendly
Unlike multi-blade razors, straight razors are environmentally friendly. After all, as long as you maintain your razor properly, it will last forever. The same can't certainly be said about multi-blade razors.
4. Reduce Skin Irritation
One of the main reasons why men are looking for straight razors is because they're just tired of getting their skin irritated every time they shave.
If you think about it, this makes perfect sense especially if you're used to using a multi-blade razor.
After all, you will have multiple blades passing on your skin at the same time. So, even if you only shave once, you will have 3, 4, or 5 blades passing through the same exact area.
This may lead to irritation. On the other hand, when you use a straight razor, you'll just pass an area once at a time.
